Tenure Ineligible Faculty:

Postdoctoral Fellows

Research Associate, Posting #0609775 - The Department of Pharmacology seeks a motivated postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Douglas A. Bayliss aimed at understanding molecular bases for modulation of ion channels that regulate cell function. This may include: determining expression patterns of receptors and ion channels in tissue by using neuroanatomical approaches such as in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry; electrophysiological recordings from ion channels expressed endogenously or heterologously in native and cultured cells; and molecular manipulation of ion channels and signal transduction pathways in those same cells by transfection or viral-mediated gene transfer. The successful candidate is expected to develop a directed research project exploring the role of background ion channels, present the findings during lab meetings and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals.

Research Associate, Posting #0609746 - The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a motivated postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Patrice Guyenet. The lab seeks to understand how respiration and blood pressure are regulated in health and disease. The incumbent is expected to develop a directed research project exploring the role of brainstem neurons in stress, respiration and autonomic outflow, present the findings during lab meetings and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals. More details about our research interests can be found at the departmental website: http://pharm.virginia.edu/FacultyI/Guyenet.html.

Research Scientist, Posting #0609559 - The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Scientist to work in the laboratory of Dr. Julius Zhu. The focus of this position in the lab is to develop cutting-edge new technologies to dissect subcellular signaling mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity and mental disorders. Applicants must have PhD and/or MD degree(s) with experience in advanced molecular biology, electrophysiology and behavioral analysis. The qualified individual is also expected to contribute to the writing of manuscripts and grants.

Research Associate, Posting #0609353 - The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a motivated postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct research in the laboratory of Dr Bimal Desai. The lab is focused on understanding the role of ion channels and Ca2+-signaling in the differentiation and homeostasis of hematopoietic cells. The incumbent designs, conducts and troubleshoots individual experiments in consultation with the PI and develops a directed research project exploring the role of TRP channels in the immune system, present the findings during lab meetings and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals. Details about the department's research interests can be found via: http://www.pharm.virginia.edu/FacultyI/Desai.html

Research Associate, Posting #0609246 - The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Associate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Ira Schulman. The incumbent performs in vitro and in vivo experiments to study the regulation of transcription by nuclear hormone receptors. The selected candidate presents his/her research at the Pharmacology Department Journal Club and at the Department monthly Metabolic Disease meetings as well as participates in the training of graduate students, undergraduate students, and other junior staff in the Principal Investigators lab.

Staff:

Laboratory Specialist Supervisor, Posting #0609755 - Department of Pharmacology seeks a Laboratory and Research Specialist Senior to assist senior investigators with the development of in vitro, cell-based and whole organism assays for multiple diseases related to cancer, Alzheimer's disease, leishmaniasis and other rare, neglected or orphan diseases. Incumbent helps design in vitro, cell-based and whole organism small molecule and siRNA screening assays, handles and maintains compound and RNA libraries, uses automated liquid handling and bulk dispensing systems and applies statistical methodology for the analysis of large datasets. Individual assists senior investigators with daily laboratory management, trains junior research staff, helps laboratory members with experimental design, performs data management/visualization and assists with manuscript/grant compilation. Western blotting, cell/parasite culture and sterile technique, compound handling and library reformatting, expression vector engineering, fluorescence microscopy, recombinant protein production, enzyme activity assays and additional molecular biology experience is necessary.

Laboratory Specialist Junior, Posting #0609743 - The Department of Pharmacology seeks a laboratory & research specialist junior to assist investigators with experiments designed to understand basic brain function. The laboratory has a strong neuroscience focus and utilizes electrophysiological, anatomical and computational techniques to understand how single neurons generate electrical and chemical signals, and how ensembles of neurons generate complex patterns of activity. The individual helps support the acquisition and analysis of in vitro and in vivo electrophysiological data, and works with rodents.

Laboratory and Research Specialist Junior, Posting #0609703 - The Department of Pharmacology seeks a Laboratory and Research Specialist, Jr. to assist senior investigator in research of neurological, mental and/or psychiatric disorders using cutting-edge technologies, including multiple recombinant DNA/protein delivery and replacement, simultaneous octuple whole-cell recordings, two-photon laser scanning and immunoelectron microscopy. Training in new techniques is provided. Experience in small animal handling is also required.

Lab Specialist Senior, Posting #0609253 - The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia has an immediate opening for a Laboratory and Research Specialist Senior to work in the Laboratory of Dr. Ira Schulman, PhD. The incumbent carries out experiments and other tasks to support the research goals of the Schulman laboratory. The science focuses on the regulation of transcription by members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily. Daily experimental procedures require expertise in molecular biology and one or more of following techniques: chromatin immunoprecipitation particularly whole genome approaches, flow cytometry, protein purification and/or FPLC/HPLC. The Lab Specialist Senior must be able to meet the University's guidelines for working with mice.
